Trees listed as being protected (FOI-6366)
Message from Hackney Council
Dear ***** *****
Re: Freedom of Information Request /Environmental Information Request
Thank you for your request for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, received 10 August 2020. Your request has been considered and our response is in bold below.
You requested the following:
The East London Garden Society is requesting through The Freedom of Information Act the number of trees listed as being protected this to include ancient and veteran trees. The East London Garden Society is also requesting the species of trees that are protected.
The Council’s Response
The information you have requested is exempt under Section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act. Section 21 (2a) states that "information which is reasonably accessible to the applicant (even if it is accessible only on payment) is exempt". In this instance, the information is available on the Councils website using link below:
https://map.hackney.gov.uk/LBHackneymap/ (Please click on Environment and Planning folder and tick the relevant information you would like to see i.e. TPO and/or Conservation Area)
Trees either have protection through a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or from being situated within a Conservation Area (CA). Hackney"s Find My Nearest tool (the above link provided) enables members of the public to search all TPOs and CAs within the borough. For TPOs, this includes the species for each listing along with a TPO ID, which indicates the number of trees within each Order. This data is regularly updated as new TPOs are issued or CAs adopted or extended.
The Council does not hold a separate list of TPOs and is not required to hold information with regards to ancient and veteran trees. Such assessments are made on a case by case basis as required.
