Freedom of Information request - Long Term Empty Properties (FOI-149)
Dear Hackney Borough Council,
Please provide the number of long term empty properties (those over six months) as of 1st May 2018. This is just a request for the total amount of residential properties and no further detail is required.
Dear Mr ***,
Thank you for your request about long-term empty properties in London Borough of Hackney.
In your request you ask to be provided with the number of long term empty properties (i.e. those that have been empty for more than six months) as at 1st May 2018. You clarify your request by stating that the figure required is for just the total number of residential properties and no further detail is required.
We are now able to confirm that, as at 1 May 2018, there were 1,293 Council Tax accounts where a discount or an exemption had been granted on the basis that the property was either unoccupied but furnished or both unoccupied and unfurnished. Please be aware that some of these exemptions have been granted in respect of particular legislatively prescribed circumstances, such as the liable person is deceased, has been detained, has moved to receive or provide care or has moved to reside in a care home or hospital.
Other circumstances that are also included in this total are where the property has been re-possessed, occupation is prohibited by law, it is owned and left empty by a student or it is an unoccupied annexe of the main home. Some accounts will also have been granted the Second Home – Class B discount on the basis that although they may be regularly occupied, they are nobody’s sole or main residence (i.e. they are a second home) and as such attract the same Second Home – Class B discount that unoccupied but furnished homes are charged in Hackney.
Finally, whilst you have not specifically requested a separate figure, we can, whilst writing, advise that as at 1 May 2018, there were 464 accounts subject to the 150% Long Term Empty Premium.
